Grace O'Malley

also known as Grainne Mhaol Ni Mhaille

Was a formidable 16th-century Irish chieftain, sea captain, and pirate queen from County Mayo. Born around 1530 into the seafaring Ó Máille clan, she defied gender norms by commanding fleets, engaging in trade and piracy, and leading men in battle. Her life was marked by bold resistance to English rule, including a legendary face-to-face negotiation with Queen Elizabeth I in 1593 to secure the release of her captured family. Revered in Irish folklore and history, Grace O'Malley remains a symbol of independence, courage, and maritime prowess.
